THE WANING CRESCENT MOON FORMS A TRIANGLE WITH PLANETS JUPITER AND VENUS TOMORROW MORNING! PLUS ANOTHER GREAT CHANCE TO OBSERVE MERCURY! – 20/08/2025
Early birds and all night stargazers are in for a very special celestial treat tomorrow morning!
Tomorrow, in the early morning of the 20th of August, the 10% illuminated waning crescent Moon will appear close by to the bright planets Venus and Jupiter, with the three luminaries forming an almost perfect equilateral triangle!
This amazing gathering will make for a beautiful sight and a fantastic photographic opportunity!
WHEN AND WHERE TO LOOK
Look towards the East during the early morning twilight before sunrise for a chance to view this special gathering. The Moon, Jupiter and Venus will rise above the North-Eastern horizon at roughly 01:25, 01:49, and 02:34 BST respectively, but will all be easier to observe once they have risen a little above the horizon.
LOOK OUT FOR MERCURY TOO!
The morning of the 20th will also be another great opportunity to observe the speedy and elusive planet Mercury too! Mercury may be easier to find with the help of a pair of binoculars, but remember to stop using your binoculars once the sun appears! Mercury will rise in the North-East at around 04:03. Scan the area of sky around 15 degrees below and left of Venus to find Mercury.
OTHER PLANETARY/LUNAR CELESTIAL EVENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR
There are quite a few planets that are visible in our night and early morning skies at the moment, and some people are calling this period of time another “Planetary Alignment/Parade”. The planets Saturn, Venus and Jupiter as well as Mercury are all fairly easy to spot at this moment in time and there will also be another special “alignment” with the Moon and planets soon too!
