In March 2023, the aurora borealis put on an extraordinary display visible across the entire UK — one of the brightest and longest-lasting the country had seen. This photograph was captured in a single shot, shortly after the end of one of our stargazing events in Dalby Forest, when the aurora was still blazing overhead.

The image came about in an unexpected moment — Nicole had gone to find the resident artist to share the news that the aurora was visible, as earlier that evening he'd mentioned he'd never seen it. On the way, she found this frame: a lone tree silhouetted against the cosmic light of the northern lights.
