Today is World Photography day, a global celebration of the art, craft, science, and history of photography!
The theme for this year’s World Photography Day is "My Favourite Photo".
We’ve captured countless photographs on our celestial adventures over the years, so it is incredibly difficult to chose just one, but we have decided to share with you a very special moment for us.
It was a cold, wet, winter night on New Year’s Eve 2022, or more specifically the early morning of New Year's Eve. We were out exploring the coast of our hometown, Scarborough. To our surprise, we were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime visitor—a magnificent walrus named Thor! 🦭✨
Yes, a WALRUS, by the coast of our little home town of Scarborough! 😱🌟
He was resting so peacefully on the slipway by the harbour. It was just us, him, a couple of passersby, and the incredible team from BDMLR, RSPCA, and the Sealife Center who were there to monitor and protect him. Words can’t express how excited we were to witness this special arctic visitor. We couldn’t believe we saw a real life, wild Walrus! It was so incredible and breathtaking! We were in awe!
After catching our breath, we managed to capture this magical once in a lifetime photograph of Thor resting peacefully with the harbour lights and boats reflecting in the water behind him. 🛥️💫
We've never shared this photo before, but today felt like the perfect moment! 💖 And wow, we still can’t believe we saw a wild walrus, in real life, in our own hometown. What an unforgettable experience!! 😍🙀
At the time we captured this image, we chose not to release our photograph of Thor for fear we might draw too much attention to him. We weren’t sure what might unfold and were thinking first and foremost about his welfare. Thankfully, despite attracting a large crowd of admirers the next day, the team that were there to protect him did an incredible job and with a barrier in place, he was well looked after on his visit to Scarborough. We were pleased that the council even cancelled the New Year's Eve firework display over concerns for his welfare. 🎆
After visiting Scarborough, Thor became a global sensation, featured in news broadcasts and publications around the world… he even inspired a musical! It was incredible to watch his story reach so many people.
But yes, seriously, how incredible is it that a WALRUS was chilling in Scarborough?! 🦭💖
