Aurora Alert — Potential for Northern Lights Tonight! (8th August 2026)

There is a real chance of aurora activity over the UK tonight, with both anticipated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) having arrived at Earth today and solar wind conditions currently looking very encouraging. Here's a full breakdown of what's happening and what it means for aurora watchers across the British Isles tonight.
What is causing the elevated solar wind?
Two CMEs that erupted from the Sun on the 3rd and 4th of August 2026 have now both arrived at Earth today, bringing with them a significantly elevated solar wind. Their arrival was anticipated by space weather forecasters and both appear to have arrived broadly as expected. In addition, a Coronal Hole High Speed Stream is also contributing to the elevated conditions, and several further low-level CMEs are in transit and may provide additional boosts to the solar wind in the coming hours and days.
Current solar wind conditions
As of 21:30 BST this evening, the solar wind conditions are as follows:
- Solar wind speed — currently hovering around 330 km/s, a moderately elevated speed consistent with CME arrival
- Solar wind density — currently at 7.5 particles per cm³
- IMF strength (Bt) — currently around 17 nT, a moderately elevated level indicating good magnetic energy available to drive geomagnetic activity
- IMF polarity (Bz) — currently at -12 nT and has been locked in a sustained southward orientation for over 5 hours
The sustained southward Bz is the most exciting aspect of tonight's conditions. When the Bz is pointing southward, it is oriented opposite to Earth's own magnetic field, allowing the solar wind to connect with Earth's magnetosphere through magnetic reconnection and drive the geomagnetic activity that produces the aurora. A Bz of -12 nT held for over 5 hours is a very encouraging sign indeed.
It's already happening
Encouragingly, the aurora has already been captured on camera down to 53°N in Russia this evening. This is confirmation that the solar wind conditions are already driving real aurora activity at lower latitudes. We won't know exactly how far south the display will reach over the UK until reports start coming in from across Europe as darkness falls, but the early signs are promising. Aurora activity can come in bursts, so even if things are quiet initially it is worth staying patient and keeping watch throughout the evening.
Earth weather
At the start of the night, South West England and South East Ireland look best for clear skies. Throughout the night we may start to see skies clearing further northwards towards Northern England, Wales and patches of clear sky in Northern Scotland. As always, weather forecasts are never 100% accurate and the only way to be sure is to head out and check your northern horizon!
Lunar conditions
Great news on the Moon front tonight! The Moon is a waning crescent at only around 18% illumination and doesn't rise until 00:18 BST. This means that for the earlier part of the night, lunar light pollution will not be an issue at all. This gives aurora hunters an excellent window of dark skies before moonrise. 🌙
Astronomical darkness
Good news! We are starting to see more astronomical darkness returning as we head towards the autumn equinox. True astronomical darkness tonight falls between 23:27 and 03:19 BST at mid UK, giving a good window of genuinely dark skies for aurora hunting.
Who has the best chance tonight?
Those in Scotland, northern England, Northern Ireland and Wales have the best chance of seeing the aurora tonight. However, if geomagnetic activity increases further, sightings further south are possible. The key factors will be how long the Bz remains southward, whether the additional CMEs in transit provide further boosts, and of course local cloud cover.
Tips for aurora spotting
- Get away from light pollution — even a short drive out of town can make a dramatic difference
- Allow your eyes to dark adapt — give yourself at least 15-20 minutes away from bright lights
- Use your camera — the aurora is often visible in camera images before it becomes clearly visible to the naked eye. Try a 10-15 second exposure at a high ISO pointing toward the northern horizon
- Face north — the aurora will appear on the northern horizon, rising higher into the sky as activity increases
- Stay patient — aurora activity can come and go in bursts. It's worth staying out for a while and checking periodically
- Monitor space weather — keep an eye on Space Weather Live (spaceweatherlive.com) or the Met Office Space Weather forecast for real-time updates
- Stay safe — if heading out to dark sky locations, let someone know where you're going and take a torch and warm layers
