Summer Solstice Sunset Captured Above the Mist on the North York Moors🌞🌄 ⛅ ✨ 💖

On the day of Summer Solstice we headed out with the idea of catching the sunset with our cameras and our drone. Unfortunately it was quite foggy along the Yorkshire coast and across the North York Moors, and we weren't sure if we would see anything.

Our Summer Solstice Adventure

We initially planned to head to Whitby to catch the sunset with Whitby Abbey, however as we drove across the Moors it became clear that we probably wouldn't see much due to the fog.

And so we decided to stop along the way nearby to Ravenscar and send our drone up anyway to see what it could see.

Above the mist, the solstice sunset was incredible. A sky full of colour, glowing above a sea of mist that stretched as far as we could see.

What we were seeing was a temperature inversion, cold air trapped beneath a layer of warmer air, capping the fog and preventing it from rising. From above, it creates a breathtaking illusion: a literal ocean of white, fluffy cloud stretching to the horizon, with the hilltops of the moors poking through like islands in a sea of mist.

Towards the North-West the sun was painting the skies with spectacular oranges and yellows and the light shining on the mist was mesmerising.

Once we had set the drone down, we went to one of our favourite places up on the Moors to let Luna and her little sister Selena have a run around amongst the heather. Luna and Selena love playing on the Moors and they had a great time running and jumping together in the heather.

As Luna and Selena played we also witnessed the beautiful first quarter Moon as well as some faint Noctilucent Clouds peeking through the mist.

After a little while we packed up and headed home. All in all it was an amazing evening upon the misty moors.
