Iron meteorites are pieces of the once molten core of large asteroids or other planetary bodies — ancient worlds that were violently blasted apart by catastrophic impacts billions of years ago. What you hold in your hand is a fragment of a lost planet's heart.

The first record of the Campo del Cielo meteorite was in 1576, when a Spanish governor learned of the iron from local Indians who believed it had fallen from heaven. An expedition under Captain de Miraval recovered pieces of a huge iron mass he called Meson de Fierro (table of iron) — and the legend was born.

Each crystal is obtained by freezing a large piece of Campo del Cielo in liquid nitrogen and shattering it with a hammer blow — revealing the fascinating natural crystal shapes and often producing flat surfaces displaying the fine parallel Neumann lines of the kamacite phase, thought to be shock-induced during ancient impacts on the parent body.
