Scarborough Castle Flower Moonrise Sequence | Photography Print

Some photographs require patience, planning, and a little bit of luck. This one required all three.

This is a composite timelapse image from May 2025 capturing the Flower Moon as it rose above Scarborough Castle, one of England's most dramatic and historic coastal landmarks. Rather than freezing a single fleeting moment, this photograph reveals the Moon's ascent from the horizon: six individual frames extracted from a timelapse sequence, each blended with a single base exposure of the castle silhouetted against the twilight sky.

Careful thought went into choosing the shooting location. We planned the composition in advance to ensure the Moon would rise in exactly the right position relative to the castle so that each lunar position would sit naturally within the frame, forming a gentle staircase from the treeline to the open sky. It was the first time we had attempted this kind of shot, and we were delighted with the result.

Watch the Moon's journey unfold across the image: deep amber at the horizon, warming through gold as it climbs, the six positions tracing a quiet, unhurried arc above the ancient stonework. There is something almost architectural about it, creating a celestial staircase echoing the stone steps and battlements below, connecting the earthly and the celestial in a single frame.

The Flower Moon takes its name from the abundance of wildflowers blooming across the Northern Hemisphere each May. A detail that sits in quiet contrast to the cold, timeworn stone of the castle that has stood on this headland for nearly nine centuries.
