On the 10th of March 2025, we stood on the flat black sands in front of the Vestrahorn Mountains in Iceland, watching the aurora dance overhead. This image is a single frame pulled from a timelapse, chosen because in that precise moment, the aurora formed a perfect halo around the mountains, as if the sky itself had framed them.

Vestrahorn is a breathtaking location. When rain or snow has passed through, a thin layer of water settles across the wide, flat sands, turning the ground into a mirror. In this shot, the mountains and the glowing aurora are reflected almost perfectly below with the sky and earth becoming one.

We had travelled all the way across Iceland specifically to be here. We were on a 12-day aurora photography trip, hiring a car and chasing clear skies each night, following the forecast wherever it led. When the models showed the east of the island clearing, we knew we had to make the drive to Vestrahorn. It was a must-see location, and it did not disappoint.

What makes this image even more special to us is the story behind the camera that captured it. Our Nikon D750 had been with us for over a decade, a faithful companion on countless dark sky adventures, well beyond its predicted shutter release count. During the timelapse that night, we watched through the footage as one of the shutter blades began to fail, flopping into frame before the camera finally gave up entirely. It was a bittersweet moment, but what a place to take its final frames. We like to think it went out on its own terms, in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Not long after capturing this shot, a dust and sand storm rolled in, forcing us to pack up and retreat. It was bitterly cold and windy, the kind of conditions that remind you how wild and untamed Iceland truly is. We had arrived in Iceland the day after completing 11 stargazing events for the North York Moors National Park Dark Skies Festival, including two back-to-back events on the final night so we were running on very little sleep. But moments like this make every mile worth it.

Our Iceland trip in March 25 was our first visit to the country, and it left a deep impression on us. Vestrahorn is on the bucket list for many aurora photographers for good reason. And standing there, watching the sky perform above those dramatic peaks, we understood exactly why.
